| American Daffodil Farm is an essential part of an Old Growth Forest conservation project. It's engulfed within a 43 acre forest, large portions of which are old growth forest and home to ancient trees. You can see photos by visiting our Photo Album. Forest Conservation requires a large investment and income to pay property taxes, interest and maintenance. After two years of research and testing of several alternatives, we determined that the most ecological and economical way to use part of the property to provide financial support for the forest is by daffodil farming. There are many reasons why daffodils are forest friendly. Here are a few: A Because the leaves and blooms of daffodils are very bitter, the deer, rabbits, raccoons and other animals that live in the forest don't eat daffodils as they do almost all profitable crop plants. B The types of daffodils we grow thrive in the forest edges as long as they get between 35 and 100 percent sun in early spring when there are no leaves on the trees. C There's no danger of bringing in pests that may damage the forest because our breeding stock was recovered from abandoned home sites where they have been growing for up to 150 years in the surrounding environs. D Because the customer only needs the flower bulbs, none of the soil ever leaves the farm. Not only does this protect the soils, but also, there's no need to import potting soils, another potential source of pests that might damage the forest. E Daffodils are permanent plants. The bulbs are planted and dug only about every sixth year. F. The daffodils in spring are a beautiful sight. We hope you will visit the forest, not only to see the daffodils and giant trees, but also for hiking, nature lectures, bird watching and primitive tent camping. The property is home to many beautiful birds and other animals. Please call us at 706-498-4731 |
